Court Appointed Special Advocates of Atlantic and Cape May Counties and its trained volunteers speak on behalf of abused and neglected children in the foster care system and are dedicated to ensuring these children are placed in safe permanent homes as quickly as possible. The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation is named for cancer survivor and professional surfer Dean Randazzo. It was created 10 years ago when Randazzo was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph nodes. Since successfully battling the disease three times, Dean continues his competitive professional surfing career, proudly representing the Garden State all over the world. This foundation raises money for cancer research and awareness and assists individuals SOUTH JERSEY battling cancer both financially and emotionally. To date, they have donated over $100,000.00 to worthy beneficiaries who fit these criteria. "Surf for a Cause" is held every September. It includes a amateur and professional surf contest, a four person team co-ed volleyball tournament, 5K Beach Run, 1 Mile Beach Walk and lots of other fun at the beach.
Along with orgainizing Somers Point Bayfest every April, each year, the Bayfest Committee uses proceeds from the event to fund special projects for the residents of Somers Point. Recent contributions include the installation of new playground equipment at the public beach, and the installation of beautiful banners adorning Historic Bay Avenue. Improvements to Bud Kern Field, donations the Mainland Region High School Commutation Arts Department, just to name a few. United Way of Atlantic County serves the needs of the local community, by targeting core areas of need and mobilizing resources. United Way serves as a catalyst for community advancement by connecting a diverse set of individuals, institutions and organizations to research, identify and implement problem-solving initiatives within the local community. United Way facilitates these activities and objectives by providing financial support through various fund raising efforts and grant opportunities. All proceeds from Tropicana's Taste of the Quarter event Sept. 8 benefit the United Way of Atlantic County.
The Hansen House mission is to treat, in a residential setting, those who suffer from alcoholism and/or drug addiction by providing counseling, discussion groups, job placement, living skills, 12-step meetings and other assistance designed to guide residents to recovery. Serenity House for Women and The Randy Scarborough House for Men are transitional sober-living homes in South Jersey. Residents live in a supportive, drug-and-alcohol-free environment while learning how to become responsible members of the community in order to live full and happy lives in recovery.

Absegami Boys Basketball Booster Club presents a Golf Outing to support the Absegami Boys Basketball team on 6/24. The 3rd Annual Scholarship and Golf Outing & Benefit is in memory of Nancy Seid who lost her battle with brain cancer in 2006. The annual walk for Williams Syndrome presented by the Downbeach Film Festival will take place on the Ventnor boardwalk on May 19. Registration begins at 9 a.m. in the gazebo at Newport Avenue and the boardwalk; the walk starts at 10 a.m. and goes in both directions along the boardwalk. The majority of the money raised will directly enrich the lives of individuals and families affected by Williams syndrome. To register for the walk online, visit www.walk4williams.org.
